More Than Bachata

Bachata has travelled far beyond the place where it began. Today it is danced across countries and communities that have developed their own preferences, influences and ways of describing what they do. Traditional. Dominican. Moderna. Sensual. Fusion. These labels can help us navigate the dance, but the dancing itself has become much more fluid than the categories around it.

That is not a problem bachata needs to solve. It is a reason for us as dancers to stop, reflect and move forward more confidently in the choices we make. Underneath the labels there is still the movement, the music, the culture that shaped it and the communication happening between two people.

Understanding where bachata comes from matters. Its Dominican roots are not a style choice or another box to subscribe to; they are part of the context of the dance. At the same time, bachata does not stop evolving because we understand its origins. Both can exist together: what we inherit and what we choose to do with it.

This is where Más Que Bachata creates space to move forward with bachata. To look a little deeper without turning that knowledge into another set of rules. That same openness shapes how we learn together, making room for different experiences, questions and ways of moving. To understand more about what we are dancing, recognise what belongs to the movement we share, and become more conscious of where our own interpretation begins.

The goal is not to find the perfect label for the bachata we dance, but to understand the dance well enough that we do not need a label to make every decision for us. That is the “more”: keeping the roots present, the conversation open and giving dancers the confidence to make their own choices.
